Overview of Hydrographic and Bathymetric Surveying

99

Hydrographyis the science of measuring and describing the topographical features and theaquatic environment beneath the surface of a body of water. These subsurfacefeatures affect bridge scour, flood mitigation, erosion control and siltationtransport, maritime navigation, marine construction, dredging, offshore oilexploration/offshore oil drilling and many other activities. Bathymetry is thestudy of the beds, or the floors, of oceans, seas, rivers, streams, and lakes. This course is designed to provide an overview of hydrographic and bathymetricsurveying and its many applications, as well as discuss the relevance of suchsurveys to environmental and civil engineering projects both in and aroundbodies of water.
