How to Renew Your California Appraisal License

Here’s an outline of the steps to renew your California appraisal license. The following information is based on the minimum requirements set forth by the California Bureau of Real Estate Appraisers (BREA).

Step 1: Know Your Renewal Deadlines

In California, you must renew your real estate appraiser license every 2 years. However, the 7-hour USPAP Update course and the Valuation Bias/Fair Housing course are the only CE that need to be completed every 2 years. The full 56 hours of continuing education is required every 4 years.

Check the expiration date printed on your license to confirm your renewal deadline. Typically, the license expiration date is 2 years from the date of issuance.

Step 2: Complete CE Requirements

California real estate appraisers must complete 56 hours of state-approved continuing education every 4 years, including:

Note: The new Valuation Bias & Fair Housing course will satisfy the 2-hour Elimination of Bias course requirement, but it will not satisfy the 1-hour Cultural Competency requirement.

Step 3: Apply for Renewal

You will need to submit a license renewal application along with proof of the appropriate continuing education. The 7-hour USPAP Update course and a Valuation Bias & Fair Housing CE course are due every 2 years; the full 56 hours of CE is due every 4 years.

You can apply for renewal online using the California BREA’s online licensing portal. Along with your application, you will need to pay all applicable fees and submit the appropriate CE course completion certificates.

Important: Verify all CE requirements with the California Bureau of Real Estate Appraisers. If you hold appraisal licenses in multiple states, please make sure to check each state’s requirements.
