How to Renew Your South Dakota Appraisal License

Here’s a quick look at the steps to renew your South Dakota appraisal license. The following information is based on the minimum requirements set forth by the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation.

Step 1: Know Your Renewal Deadlines

In South Dakota, appraisal licenses expire annually on September 30. Renewal applications are due each year by August 17.

Continuing education is due every 2 years (every other renewal period) and must be completed by August 17 of odd-numbered years. However, please note that the most recent 7-hour USPAP Update Course must be completed by June 30 of even-numbered years.

Step 2: Complete CE Requirements

South Dakota real estate appraisers must complete 28 hours of state-approved continuing education every 2 years, including:

Attention first-time applicants only: If your initial license was issued on or after October 1 of the previous even-numbered year and prior to April 1 of the current odd-numbered year, you must complete 14 hours of CE for that renewal cycle.

Step 3: Apply for Renewal

Apply for license renewal using the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation’s online licensing portal. You must pay a renewal fee with your application. During odd-numbered years, you will need to provide CE course completion certificates.

Important: Verify all CE requirements with the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation. If you hold appraisal licenses in multiple states, be sure to check each state’s requirements.

Online Info

South Dakota Appraisers are required to complete 28 continuing education hours every 24 months. Seven of the 28 hours must be completion of the 7-Hour National USPAP Update or Equivalent course. A minimum of seven of the 28 hours of instruction must be completed prior to June 30 of each even-numbered year in the most current edition 7-hour National Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) Update Course or Equivalent whose instructor is certified by the Appraiser Qualifications Board.

An appraiser is only required to complete fourteen hours of instruction in approved courses or seminars if the appraiser’s certificate is issued on or after October 1 of the previous even-numbered year and prior to 185 days before September 30 of the current odd-numbered year. However, this subdivision applies to first-time applicants only and not to applicants who have been issued an upgrade of a license or certificate.

Effective 1/1/2026
To comply with the 2026 Criteria appraisers will be required to complete a course that meets the content requirements of the Valuation Bias & Fair Housing Laws and Regulations Outline, every two calendar years.

  • The first time an appraiser completes the continuing education requirement for this course, the course length must be seven (7) hours. If an appraiser successfully completed a seven (7) hour (plus 1 hour exam) course as part of their qualifying education, they have met this requirement.
  • Every two calendar years thereafter, the course length must be at least four (4) hours

State implementation timelines and regulatory updates may vary. Students should contact their regulatory board directly to confirm that the course is required or if they have questions.
