In this course, we will examine the history, equipment, technology, theory, and use of GPS/GNSS systems. Note: If specific systems or brands of equipment are referenced, it is not intended to express a preference or recommendation of said brands, equipment, and/or systems over others. It simply reflects the author’s familiarity with said systems. Depending on the location, tasks, and technological specifications of a project, one brand or specific combination of equipment may be superior for accomplishing the work, but the decision is up to the surveyor to choose what equipment is best suited for the conditions and deliverables. Regardless of the equipment chosen, the surveyor must make certain they are proficient with it before using it on an actual project.

This course explores the essential role of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in everyday life and modern land surveying. Through a combination of written text, visual examples, and practical applications, participants will be exposed to a solid foundation in GPS/GNSS history, principles, techniques, and best practices tailored to the needs of professional surveyors. This asynchronous course allows learners to complete the content at their own pace while ensuring understanding of key concepts through quizzes and real-world examples.
