How to become an appraiser in Louisiana

Your path to become an appraiser in Louisiana begins as a Trainee Appraiser. At the trainee level, you’ll work under the guidance of a registered Supervisory Appraiser. Your supervisor will teach you how to assess properties, conduct market research, and write appraisal reports.

Steps to become a Trainee Appraiser

Here are the steps you’ll need to take to become a Trainee Appraiser in Louisiana:

Step 1: Complete the required education.

You’ll need to pass 79 hours of Louisiana trainee appraiser education, which includes three Basic Qualifying Education courses and a mandatory Supervisor/Trainee course:

  • Basic Appraisal Principles (30 hours)
  • Basic Appraisal Procedures (30 hours)
  • 15-hour National USPAP Course or equivalent (15 hours)
  • Supervisor/Trainee Course for Louisiana (4 hours)

Step 2: Connect with a Supervisory Appraiser.

You’ll need to connect with a Certified Residential or Certified General Appraiser who will agree to serve as your Supervisory Appraiser during your time as a Trainee. You can begin searching for a supervisor while completing your qualifying education.

Step 3: Apply for your Trainee Appraiser registration.

Apply to become a registered Trainee Appraiser by submitting the following to the Louisiana Real Estate Appraisers Board (LREAB):

  • Trainee Appraiser application
  • Education completion certificates
  • Application fee
  • Fingerprints for background check

Important: Verify all requirements with the Louisiana licensing board. For more information, contact the Louisiana Real Estate Appraisers Board at 225.925.1923.

Next steps to become a licensed or certified appraiser in Louisiana

Once you are a registered Trainee Appraiser, you can start working under the guidance of a supervisor. You’ll need to keep a log documenting your appraisal experience. Meanwhile, you’ll also need to take additional appraisal qualifying education courses and pass a national exam to become a licensed appraiser in Louisiana.

You’ll need to work with a supervisor for at least 6-18 months before you can apply for your Licensed Residential, Certified Residential, or Certified General appraisal license. After that, you’ll be allowed to work independently (without the oversight of a supervisor). You can even launch your own appraisal business.

Navigate to the “Licensed Residential,” “Certified Residential,” and “Certified General” tabs at the top of this page to see what’s required to earn those credentials.
